Project: Motion Presents Finding Memphis: Tiny Dances / Hidden Spaces
Memphis, Tenn. (September 8, 2016) – Project: Motion Modern Dance Collective inaugurates its 2016 – 2017 season at the Jay Etkin Gallery in Cooper-Young. This October, we turn to our layered city and the artists among us to bring images to their feet.
Project: Motion collaborates with Carla McDonald and Courtney Oliver of FindMemphis (findmemphis.com), diving into the process and product of Carla’s photographs to show how the city informs us as artists of Memphis, how we thrive in reflecting each other, and how we inspire and in turn are inspired.
Carla McDonald (formerly of The Bouffants) and Courtney Oliver are Resident Company Members with Playhouse on the Square who create and curate FindMemphis together with England-native Rory Dale. McDonald’s photographs “celebrate the unapologetic soul of a river city.” FindMemphis celebrates and promotes the goings-on of Memphis and expresses McDonald and Oliver’s shared thrill for discovering our city.
Project: Motion dance makers include Ballet Memphis alum Travis Bradley, local artist and writer Sheri Bancroft, NYU Tisch alum and Memphis native Jonathan Matthews, High Point, NC dance teacher and performer with JOYEMOVEMENT Amelia Renee Byrd, St. Mary’s instructor and Tennessee Ballet Theater Company Director Erin Kenny Walter, Hutchison ballet and movement instructor Louisa Koeppel, and more. As Memphis musician Drew Holcomb states, “Memphis doesn’t hide its scars – but instead wears them proudly as it gathers around you to tell its story.” Our artists show these stories through movement – beauty, scars and all.
Project: Motion’s first show of the season lays the groundwork for our 30th anniversary celebration and show to take place at Theatreworks June 28 – July 2, 2017. Tiny Dances / Hidden Spaces will take place at the Jay Etkin Gallery in Cooper Young, October 22 at 7 pm and October 23 at 6 pm. Come learn why Dr. Elena Stoeva calls Memphis’ longest-running modern dance company’s productions “so complete, and true to the values of dance.”
